What does a percentage mean?

Percent means “per hundred.” A percentage describes a number relative to 100: 25% is 25 out of 100, or one quarter. The percent symbol % is another way of writing a fraction with a denominator of 100.

To calculate a percentage of a number, multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 20% of 150 is 20 × 150 ÷ 100 = 30. Here, 150 is the whole, 20% is the rate and 30 is the part.

Everyday ways to use a percentage of a value

Work out a tip amount

A 15% tip on a bill of 48 is 7.20: enter 15 as the percentage and 48 as the value. The answer is the tip itself. Add it to the bill separately to get 55.20 before splitting the payment.

Check a commission or a budget share

If a commission is 6% of a sale worth 2,500, the amount is 150. If you set aside 10% of a budget of 800, that share is 80. Use the same units throughout: a percentage is unitless, but the resulting amount has the same unit as the starting value.

Calculate a tax amount from a known rate

For a stated sales tax rate of 8% on an amount of 50, the tax amount is 4. Adding that amount gives a total of 54. Use the applicable rate and taxable amount for your transaction.

Find the amount saved in a sale

20% of a price of 150 is a saving of 30. The price after the discount is 120. The discount calculator app feature explains the relationship between the original price, saving and sale price.

Decimals, fractions and quick percentage checks

50% is 0.5 or one half; 25% is 0.25 or one quarter; 10% is 0.1 or one tenth. These equivalents help you check whether an answer makes sense. Half of 80 is 40, so 50% of 80 should also be 40.

For a quick mental calculation, find 10% by dividing by 10. Then halve that amount to get 5%, or double it to get 20%. For example, 10% of 240 is 24, so 5% is 12 and 15% is 36.

Enter 12.5 to calculate 12.5%, rather than entering its decimal equivalent 0.125. The calculator already divides the percentage by 100. Use a decimal point or an unambiguous decimal comma. For thousands, enter 1000 without a separator. If a comma could mean either a decimal or thousands, the calculator asks you to clarify it.

We’re here to help

Which calculators can I use for free?

Percentage of a value, percentage change, finding the whole (“a is %b of c”), and a part as a percentage of the total. Each has its own page on this site, with no sign-up.

What do I get with Premium?

Premium unlocks all calculators in the mobile app and removes ads. Choose a monthly plan or a lifetime purchase. Current prices and terms are shown in your app store and in the app.

What’s the difference between “Find the whole” and “Part of a total”?

“Find the whole” works out the total when you know a part and its percentage: 30 is 20% of 150. “Part of a total” finds the percentage when you know both amounts: 30 out of 150 is 20%.

Are my online calculations private?

The calculators on this page run in your browser. The numbers you enter are not sent to a server. Copying a result uses your device’s clipboard.

Is the app available for my phone?

The Percentage Calculator is available on the App Store for iPhone and iPad, and on Google Play for Android. Check your store listing for device compatibility.

How do I calculate 20% of a number?

Divide the number by 5, or multiply it by 0.2. For 150, both methods give 30. In this calculator, enter 20 in Percentage and 150 in Value.

How do I find a percentage of another percentage?

Multiply the first rate as a decimal by the second percentage. For example, 50% of 20% is 0.50 × 20% = 10%. In this calculator, enter 50 and 20; the numeric answer 10 represents 10% in that context.

What is 1% of a number?

Divide the number by 100. For example, 1% of 450 is 4.5. To find 3%, multiply that answer by 3 to get 13.5.

Why is my answer an amount rather than a percentage?

This page finds a part of a known value, so 20% of 150 returns 30. To turn two amounts into a percentage, use the percentage of total calculator.
