Calculate discounts from the original price
A percentage discount reduces the price by a share of the original amount. With an original price of 150 and 20% off, the saving is 150 × 0.20 = 30. Subtract that saving to get the sale price: 150 − 30 = 120.
| What you want | Formula | Example |
|---|
| Amount saved | original × discount ÷ 100 | 150 × 20 ÷ 100 = 30 |
| Final price | original × (1 − discount ÷ 100) | 150 × 0.80 = 120 |
| Discount percentage | (original − sale) ÷ original × 100 | (150 − 120) ÷ 150 × 100 = 20% |

Why successive discounts do not simply add up
Two reductions apply to different prices. Starting at 100, a 20% discount leaves 80. A further 10% off that 80 saves another 8 and leaves 72. The combined saving is 28%, calculated as 1 − (0.80 × 0.90).
A percentage discount also differs from a fixed amount off. Taking 20 off a price of 150 gives 130; taking 20% off gives 120. Check whether a promotion states a percent or a currency amount.
Taxes, delivery charges and coupon restrictions can affect the amount due. The examples here compare item prices before those extra conditions. Use the checkout total to confirm the final charge.
