Convert a fraction to a percentage
The numerator is the number above the fraction line; the denominator is the number below it. Divide the numerator by the denominator to get a decimal, then multiply by 100 to express that value as a percent.
For 3/8, calculate 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375, then 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%. The fraction, decimal and percentage describe the same value in different forms.
| Fraction | Decimal | Percentage |
|---|
| 1/2 | 0.5 | 50% |
| 1/4 | 0.25 | 25% |
| 3/4 | 0.75 | 75% |
| 1/5 | 0.2 | 20% |
| 1/8 | 0.125 | 12.5% |
| 1/3 | 0.333… | 33.333…% |
Improper fractions, mixed numbers and rounding
A numerator larger than the denominator gives a value above 100%. For example, 5/4 = 1.25 = 125%. A mixed number such as 1 1/2 equals 3/2, which is 150%.
Some fractions have repeating decimal expansions. One third is exactly 33⅓%, but 33.33% is a rounded approximation. Keep more digits during intermediate calculations, then round the final percentage to the precision you need.
A zero denominator is undefined. A zero numerator with a nonzero denominator gives 0%. Simplifying a fraction before converting does not change its value: 6/8 and 3/4 both give 75%.
Check the result by converting back
For a mathematical check, convert the percent to a fraction over 100 and simplify. For example, 37.5% = 37.5/100 = 375/1,000 = 3/8. A negative fraction retains its sign: −1/4 equals −25%.
