How to convert percent to decimal
Convert a percent to a decimal by dividing by 100. The percent sign means “per hundred.” To convert 12.5% to a decimal, calculate 12.5 ÷ 100 = 0.125 and remove the percent sign. To convert back, multiply the decimal by 100 and add %.
| Percentage | Divide by 100 | Decimal |
|---|
| 0.5% | 0.5 ÷ 100 | 0.005 |
| 1% | 1 ÷ 100 | 0.01 |
| 5% | 5 ÷ 100 | 0.05 |
| 12.5% | 12.5 ÷ 100 | 0.125 |
| 50% | 50 ÷ 100 | 0.5 |
| 75% | 75 ÷ 100 | 0.75 |
| 100% | 100 ÷ 100 | 1 |
| 150% | 150 ÷ 100 | 1.5 |
Use decimal rates in a percentage formula
To find 5% of 200, multiply 200 by 0.05 to get 10. Multiplying by 5 would give 1,000, which is one hundred times too large. The free percentage calculator accepts the percentage itself and performs the conversion for you.
A decimal rate and a change multiplier serve different purposes. The rate for a 5% increase is 0.05; the multiplier that gives the new amount is 1.05. For a 5% decrease, the multiplier is 0.95.
Moving the decimal point two places left is a shortcut for division by 100. Add zeros where needed: 0.5% becomes 0.005. Values above 100% convert to decimals above 1, and negative percentages retain their sign, so −5% becomes −0.05.
For a fraction such as 3/8, divide first to get 0.375, then multiply by 100 to get 37.5%. See the fraction to percent examples for more conversions.
