What percent is one number of another?
To find what percentage one number is of another, divide the part by the total and multiply by 100. For 30 out of 150, the ratio is 0.2, or 20%.
The order matters. 30 is 20% of 150, while 150 is 500% of 30. Put the amount you are measuring in Part value and the amount you are comparing it with in Total value.
The app calls this free function “% of a part value.” It finds the percentage itself. The percentage calculator on the homepage does the opposite task: it finds an amount from a known percentage.
Calculate a score, a budget share or progress toward a target
Exam and quiz scores
18 correct answers out of 24 is 18 ÷ 24 × 100 = 75%. For a test with differently weighted questions, use points earned and maximum possible points instead of the number of answers.
Spending as a share of a budget
If a category uses 240 from a total budget of 1,200, it represents 20%. Use amounts from the same time period and in the same currency.
Progress and amounts above a target
Reaching 36 of a target of 60 gives 60% progress. Reaching 75 against the same target gives 125%. A result above 100% means the measured amount is larger than the reference total.
Combining percentages without losing the total
Do not average percentages from groups of different sizes unless each group should have equal weight. Someone scoring 8 out of 10 has 80%; someone scoring 45 out of 90 has 50%. Together, they scored 53 out of 100, or 53%. The simple average of 80% and 50% would be 65%, which answers a different question.
For a combined share, add the parts and add the corresponding totals, then calculate the percentage from those sums. To find an unknown total from a share instead, use find the whole from a percentage.
To calculate a percentage increase or decrease, subtract the starting amount from the new amount and compare that difference with the starting amount. Use the percentage change calculator for this task. A part-to-total share compares one amount directly with a reference total.
A total of zero cannot be used as a denominator. A part of zero with a nonzero total gives 0%. When the part equals the total, the result is 100%.
